Kanda International in 2007.
Kanda International Limited is a Papua New Guinean owned company that strives to provide excellent insurance services to clients based on sound, professional and ethical principles.
This approach has ensured a steady flow of clients and increase in staff numbers within the few years Kanda has been in operation. Last year Kanda experienced a 60 per cent growth in business from the previous year. This year (2007) the growth is anticipated to be only 40 per cent, a result of new insurance companies opening up in Port Moresby.
“In order for us to be successful in our industry, I consider that the way forward is to provide the most efficient and competitive service from a strategic location, fully resourced with the professionally qualified people and Office Technology,” Benn Tiki, Chief Executive Officer explained.
““Our business has been from a wide range of client base from householders and PMVs to Ship and Aircraft operators. We have established contacts from around the world to network insurance services where we place business with them if they cannot be covered in PNG. We have had overseas brokers referring business to us when some of their serviced clients move into PNG. It is all very exciting and we are looking forward to better growth and developments ahead of us. We are thankful to the National Government which has now stabilized and the economy is improving so our future looks very promising,” he added.
““Our Employees are the most important resources. We endeavor to recruit the most professional qualified people for each position within the firm. We train all our employees both in-house and from professional trainers to equip with the necessary skills that enable them to perform their roles more efficiently.

““We do encourage and support our employees to be Qualified Insurance Brokers (QPIBS) who undertake continuing professional education. This ensures they are kept up to date with the industry trends and changes so they can provide you, the insurance buyer, with quality advice,” he explained.
From its humble beginnings of a husband and wife team four years ago Kanda International Insurance Brokers now has a total of 14 staff comprising of four professional and ten technical and support staff.
““Combined, we have a total of over 80 years of experience in the insurance industry.””
Kanda International Insurance Brokers came about from a goal that Mr Tiki set in March 1993. During that time he worked for New Britain Palm Oil Limited in Mosa, Kimbe as Executive Assistant providing support to the Management Department in the areas of Personnel and Insurance for the various group of companies managed by the then Harrissons & Crossfield PNG LTD.
“The idea occurred to me when there was a write up of an Insurance Broking company that was set up by Mr. Richard Kassman. I took the first step by contacting the PNG Insurance Institute in Port Moresby and started enrolling for the Insurance courses that were run by them. I passed the first subject: 104 Insurance Company Operations with distinction and then fully committed myself to achieve the goal of one day owing and running an insurance broking company just like what Mr. Kassman had accomplished,” Mr Tiki said.
The next step towards getting into the Insurance industry was joining the insurance firm New Zealand Insurance. The company later changed its name to General Accident Insurance and was eventually bought off by what is now known as QBE Insurance (PNG) Limited. |
“My career in the industry had taken me from Account Executive to senior Manager within the Company ending up as Branch Manger for General Accident in Lae between 1996 and 2000. After the Lae role, I was recalled to Port Moresby Office as their Broker Services Manger and left to set up and run a similar operation for some investors. “I achieved my goal ten years later in 2003 when I opened my Office in down time Port Moresby. Both the Insurance Commissioner and the Bank of Papua New Guinea approved my trading licenses for the General Insurance and Life Insurance Respectively.
““We are now four years and five months old and still developing. We have grown from two to fifteen (15) staff. In May 1996, we opened a small representative office in Lae. This is part of our endeavors to bringing our services closer to some of our major clients based in Lae, Momase and the Highlands.” He said.
